Schemas and Accommodation

For example, many speakers pronounce “handbag” in a way that sounds closer to “hambag.” The mouth prepares for the following “b” sound, so the “n” moves toward an “m” sound.
Such changes are normal features of connected speech. Linguists study them to understand sound patterns, accents, and language change.
Progressive and Regressive Sound Change
There are two main directions of sound assimilation. Regressive assimilation happens when a later sound changes the sound before it. It is also called anticipatory assimilation because the mouth prepares early for the next sound.
